LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY—March 11, 2025— Today, Nature Coatings, an award-winning biochemical company turning wood waste into black pigments, announced the launch of its BioBlack Beauty line to eliminate carcinogens and other toxins found in petroleum-derived cosmetics. Backed by an Oscar-winning actor↗, BioBlack Beauty is also a finalist for a prestigious Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) Alle Awards↗ that will be announced this week.

“Women have made a trade off between health and beauty for far too long,” said Jane Palmer, CEO of Nature Coatings. “Our new line of bio-based black pigments are a nontoxic alternative to carcinogen-laded pigments commonly found in cosmetics like eyeliners and mascara.”

BioBlack Beauty is a scalable solution for petroleum-based carbon black, one of the most used sources of pigments for cosmetics and personal care products. Carbon black products have Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs include benzo[a]pyrene, which are classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). PAHs can also cause eye-irritation and inhalation risks that have been shown to cause lung and respiratory harm in cosmetic products like eyeliners, mascaras, and skincare.

“Cosmetics companies finally have a viable alternative to carbon black at scale,” said Ryan Cheng, Chief Revenue Officer at Nature Coatings. “We’re ready to help the industry transition to our more durable, versatile, and nontoxic BioBlack Beauty 13.”

Nature Coatings’ BioBlack Beauty pigments are already used in Pretty Smart’s Make Yourself at Home Matte Liquid Eyeliner sold at Walmart↗.

MEDIA PITCH

Given a choice, nobody wants a toxic oil slick on their face. Unfortunately, millions of women apply cosmetics like black eyeliners and mascara formulated with carcinogen and toxin-ladened “carbon black” derived from petroleum. It isn’t necessarily the fault of cosmetics companies because there hasn’t been a viable bio-based replacement – until now.

Today, the Leonardo DiCaprio-backed↗ startup Nature Coatings launched its long-lasting and nontoxic replacement for carbon black. It also announced that its BioBlack Beauty 13 won a prestigious Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) Alle Awards. The award further validates DiCaprio’s statement↗ on how Nature Coating’s “growth will enable brands to adopt safer practices, while also educating consumers on more sustainable products."

We thought your readers might like to know about the toxic legacy of carbon black on their health, and the nontoxic alternative derived from nature that’s just as beautiful. Let me know if you’re interested in sending questions for our CEO, Jane Palmer, the entrepreneur and award-winning scientists behind BioBlack Beauty. Thanks.
