From Forest to Finish: How Nature Coatings is Redefining Industrial Standards Through Bio-based Chemistry
On National Biobased Products Day, Nature Coatings joins the national conversation to emphasize the vital role of the U.S. bioeconomy and the transformative potential of renewable resources. For us, being bio-based is not just a trend or a marketing claim; it is the fundamental basis for the many certifications we have received and the driving force behind our mission to decarbonize color. While the industry is often saturated with vague sustainability terms, we believe that true progress requires third-party verification and total transparency.
Our commitment to high-performance, safe chemistry has led us to pursue the most rigorous standards available today. Our flagship products are proud to carry the USDA BioPreferred Certification at 100%, an independent verification that all our pigments and dispersions are entirely bio-based and derived from renewable biological sources rather than fossil fuels. This certification serves as the foundation for our credibility across all sectors—from cosmetics to textiles and asphalt to industrial plastics—ensuring that our customers can plug verified data into their emissions calculations and scale with confidence.
Beyond our work in the textile industry, our bio-based foundations have enabled us to set new benchmarks for safety in the personal care and packaging sectors. We were honored to receive the first-ever USDA 100% bio-based certification for a black pigment in cosmetics for our BioBlack Beauty line. This achievement, paired with our Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) Allē Award, proves that bio-based ingredients can outperform petroleum-derived alternatives in even the most sensitive applications. Furthermore, our commitment to a circular economy is validated by our use of FSC-certified wood waste, ensuring that our feedstock is responsibly sourced and traceable from forest to final product.
This 100% bio-based approach is what allows Nature Coatings to offer solutions that are truly carbon-negative and safe for both people and the planet. Unlike traditional carbon black—a petroleum-derived product classified as a possible human carcinogen—our BioBlack is non-toxic, PAH-free, and free from regulated toxins like PFAS and nanoparticles. As we continue to expand, our bio-based status remains the core requirement for additional safety and environmental standards we maintain, including Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification and alignment with strict global regulations like EU REACH and the ZDHC Gateway.
As highlighted in our recent press releases and case studies, industry leaders like TS Designs and Chapelton are already transitioning away from fossil-based materials to our bio-based alternatives. These partnerships prove that high performance and environmental responsibility are no longer at odds; in fact, our pigments often outperform traditional alternatives in color depth and durability while offering a more stable, domestic supply chain.
On this National Biobased Products Day, we celebrate the innovation that allows us to replace toxic industrial standards with clean, renewable alternatives, future-proofing global supply chains and moving the world closer to a circular economy.
